Oboe soloist - Louise Sprekelsen

Schubert - Overture in the Italian Style
Butterworth - Banks of Green Willow
Strauss - Oboe Concerto
Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on Greensleeves
Beethoven - Symphony No. 2 in D

Inspired by a chance meeting with an American GI, who was principal oboist in Pittsburg’s orchestra, Strauss’ late oboe concerto combines gentleness and wit and offers the soloist countless beguiling melodies. It is flanked by two enchanting pastoral works, based on English folksong. The concert begins and ends with two Viennese classics, Schubert’s response to Rossini in a ‘wonderously lovely overture’ and Beethoven’s response to his increasing deafness in a symphony whose humour, power, joy and depth seems to have impressed and baffled his contemporaries in equal measure.
