On Friday, Safer Gloucester will be launching a new initiative for cyclists, encouraging them to double lock their bikes.

Bicycle theft has increased in Gloucester.

With Christmas close at hand, and bicycles top of many people's Christmas list, Safer Gloucester is anxious to bring this increase to a halt.

At the stand on Friday they will be selling bicycle alarmed "D" locks for £10 each.

Once locked, the "D" lock will activate upon vibration, the earpiercing 130 dB siren activates for about 10 seconds every time it detects vibration of 2 seconds or more.

Gloucester Police chief inspector Richard Burge said: "We are also pleased to be able to give advice to residents now that the darker evenings are here.

"We become so busy with Christmas preparations that we can easily forget to be diligent when securing our property.

"It is important to ensure that our homes look occupied at all times. I would encourage everyone to visit the stand on Friday and take advantage of the advice on offer."

“Good idea, lets hope they follow it up with leaflets sent out to every home and website addresses as to where these devices can be bought for those of us that cannot make the event.”
