Extra £100k to prevent flood misery

Thursday, August 21, 2008, 08:00

THE Forest district will be given £104,500 for flood alleviation schemes.

The cash is part of £2 million additional funding announced for flood relief schemes by Gloucestershire County Council.

It will be used to help prevent flooding in Coleford's Newland Street car park, at Lakeside Avenue in Lydney, Ledbury Road Crescent and Moat Lane in Corse and at Steam Mills, Cinderford.

Survey work in Newent and Longhope will also be carried out.

District councillor Martin Quaile, cabinet member for the environment, welcomed the news. He said: "I am sure this news will be welcomed by the residents in those areas that were affected by last year's flooding.

"Fortunately Forest of Dean residents were spared flooding on the scale experienced in other parts of the county.

"But that is small consolation for those forced out of their homes and who are really expecting action to prevent it happening again."
