Kids targeted by drug dealer

Thursday, July 09, 2009, 08:23

Children as young as 12 are being sold drugs by a woman on the streets of Lydney.

Police are investigating reports that the woman is selling the drugs from a black car touring the town centre.

Councillor Bob Berryman told the town council that the mystery woman had recently approached his 16-year-old granddaughter.

"There are children as young as 12 being targeted," he said.

Coun Berryman runs Bathurst Pool on the old A48 with his wife Sheila.

He said last year he had to be vigilant to make sure the woman did not target teenage bathers at the open-air baths after seeing her car parked outside.

"There is a car in Lydney that has been openly approaching children for some considerable time," he said after the meeting.

"This woman has offered drugs to my 16-year-old granddaughter and I have been told she has approached 12-year-olds.

"It shows how bad the times are that we live in when they are targeting children on the street. I think it's disgraceful and horrendous that they are making their money on the backs of these young teenagers."

Mr Berryman believes that the pool, which is popular with local youngsters, is a drugs free zone and police have agreed to come out immediately if he sees any signs of dealing.

"The police have been good but they have to catch her in the act," he said.

PC Dave Reynolds told the meeting officers were aware of the woman.

A Gloucestershire Constab- ulary spokesman said: "Invest- igations into reports of a woman drug dealing from a black car in the Lydney area are continuing.

"We are urging anyone who sees anything suspicious to remember as much detail as possible, such as a number plate or description and report it to police immediately.

"We are reminding children not to speak to strangers. Walk away and tell an adult they know and trust.

"Members of the Safer Community Team are attend- ing primary schools in the area to talk to youngsters."
