Birdie blitz in Forest Pro-Am
Thursday, August 28, 2008, 00:01
Will led members Rameez Jones, Jane Baldwin and Andrew Jewitt to team victory.
He performed well in the individual event too, shooting a two-under-par 68.
On another day that might have put him among the front-runners, but with the scoring particularly high, he had to settle for a share of sixth place.
The event, the longest running pro-am in the Western region, attracted 40 teams.
Roy Sanzen Baker, who has now organised 31 of the 32 tournaments, was a relieved man when the weather stayed dry.
The breeze also helped dry up the course that, like most in the country, has been subjected to atrocious weather conditions this summer.
It was certainly to Andrew Sherborne's liking.
The former European Tour winner had visions of another sub-60 round – he shot 59 at Cirencester during his amateur days.
He was seven-under-par after seven holes – making an eagle at the first and a par at the third – and was out in 29.
Another birdie at 12 was followed by a chip-in for his seventh birdie at the 13th to go to nine-under-par.
He dropped his only shot at the short 14th.
Another birdie at 17 completed an outstanding round of 61 that was two shots better than the record of 63 set by the club's former professional Paul Davies. Andrew's round, however, will not stand as the new club record because ball placing was in operation.
He said: "I didn't have any great expectations and it just happened for me. Just like at Weymouth (his previous win), I simply relaxed."
Leading money winner Chris Gill (Exeter) must have felt he was in with a shout after a flawless 63.
However, after finishing an hour after Sherborne he soon discovered he was runner-up.
