Primal Scream coming to Gloucester

Primal Scream have announced a surprise gig at the Guildhall in Gloucester in two weeks time.

It’s the latest in a line of big names at the city venue this year, following the likes of Maximo Park and Lily Allen to the Eastgate Street venue.

The band – made up of Bobby Gillespie, Andrew Innes, Mani Mounfield, Martin Duffy, Darrin Mooney and Barrie Cadogan – arrive in the city on December 3.

Tickets are now on sale and are expected to sell out fast for the show which is being used by the band as a warm-up for the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Minehead later in the month.

Guildhall manager Chris Pike said it was another coup for the 400-capacity venue.

"We hosted Lily Allen earlier in the year and have just sold out for The Magic Numbers this month," he said.

"We’re proving that we can hold our own with London and other cities around the UK."

The band formed in 1982 and had little success with their early albums, the jangly Sonic Flower Groove and the harder-sounding Primal Scream.

It was in 1990 when they mixed their guitar sound with acid house and released Screamadelica that they started to receive critical acclaim.

Then came the blues-rock album Give Out But Don’t Give Up and, in 1994, the single Rocks.

It reached number seven in the UK singles chart.

Bass player Mani joined the line-up in 1996 after the well-publicised split of The Stone Roses.

Primal Scream released the dance-influenced Vanishing Point and then the political album XTRMNTR.

'Country Girl', from the album Riot City Blues, was released in 2006 and entered the charts at number five – their highest ever.

These days the band sound more electro-pop than ever before.

"We were against some bigger venues for this gig," said Chris.

"But promoters know this is a quality venue and the fans in the city are always very appreciative."
