More than 15,000 people are expected through the doors of Gloucester's newest shopping centre when it opens its doors for the first time tomorrow.

And bosses at the Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet are making sure shoppers can get there by any means.

Following news that the park-and-ride services have been extended to reach St Ann Way, the parking charges at the centre have also been unveiled.

Builders have been working around the clock to ensure the centre is finished on time for the 11am opening.

Franco Muccini, centre director said the final touches were being made.

He said: "With only a day to go, the builders and various teams of contractors are hard at work ensuring the centre looks its very best when the doors open to the public on Thursday morning.

"It always feels as if there are never enough hours in the day leading up to opening but we are confident that the public will be impressed by what they see when all is revealed."

After more than 10 years of planning tomorrow will see the opening of the £400m shopping centre which boasts flagship stores from Gap, M&S and Next.

It will cost £1 to park for an hour in the 1,500 space car park above and behind the shops. This rises to £3 for up to four hours, £5 for up to seven hours and £10 for the whole day.

After 5pm it costs £2 for between one and seven hours.

A park-and-ride for Gloucester Quays will operate between the Waterwells and St Oswald's park- and-ride sites via the number 507 bus every 12 minutes.

Starting from Waterwells, the new route heads down the bypass, turning into St Ann Way before stopping at the Quays, then onto Southgate Street for St Oswald's. It costs £1.50 return. The route will be extended until 8pm for a trial period.

Yellow AA signs will direct motorists to the Quays from all directions, in and around Gloucester.

From the south, motorists should turn off the M5 at junction 12, and head north along the A38, to the Waterwells park and ride, or head on up the A38 south west bypass, cross the swing bridge at the Cole Avenue junction, head along the Hempsted bypass and turn right across the new St Ann Way bridge.

From the north and Cheltenham, drivers should head along the A40 Golden Valley bypass from junction 11 of the M5, and take the ring road north to Longford and straight on to Over.

At the Over roundabout, they should turn left and bear left past Westgate Island to the St Oswald's park and ride.

Or to reach the Quays car park, turn right at the Westgate traffic lights towards Castlemeads down the south west bypass, and take the second left at the traffic lights for the St Ann Way Bridge.

From the Forest of Dean and the west, motorists should head to Over on the A40 and turn right at the roundabout, then bear left past Westgate Island to St Oswald's park and ride. For Quays parking, bear right at Westgate Island, and follow directions to St Ann Way bridge as above for motorists approaching from the north and Cheltenham.

For motorists leaving the motorway at junction 11a of the M5, they should head to the C&G roundabout at Barnwood and north along the ring road to Over, then follow directions as for those from the south.

For southbound motorists in Gloucester city centre, from the Spa traffic lights, traffic is directed down Stroud Road, in to Clifton Road, and right, back up Bristol Road, and left in to the Quays. There is NO RIGHT TURN from the end of Southgate Street in to St Ann Way and the Quays.

From the centre of Gloucester the route down to the Quays is fairly simple.

Pedestrians can either head straight down Southgate Street or take a scenic route through Gloucester Docks and across Llanthony Road.

Cyclists will find several bike stands on the outskirts of the site.

Monday-Friday 10am to 8pm, Saturday 10am to 7pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm (larger stores open from 11am). Bank Holidays 10am to 6pm.

“i think the parking at the quays is a rip off.. i ama young girl working at the quays and i can not afford the prices. yeah they say do park and ride but what happens if i miss the last bus then i have to walk back to my car which is miles away, then get attacked while doing so. i think they should take better care of their staff and customers if they want them to saty shopping with us for longer.”

“"Cyclists will find several bike stands on the outskirts of the site."

Cyclists may find some stands outside the site, but they will find no bike stands at Gloucester Quays itself because there is no cycle parking there. And you're not allowed to even wheel your bicycle along High Orchard Street because bicycles are banned.”

“Anybody thought about giving directions from the railway station to the Quays?”

“Ouch! Whats wrong with T of Glos then? Maybe this person is one of the Chavs that blight the once proud City of Gloucester. Come on T- get real and at least consider other peoples views.”

“T of Glos- whats your problem. I have read Jr's comments and totally agree. I think this reader makes a great deal of sense and speaks for many of us.
Do you work for The Quays? Hence your obvious anger.”

“JR, Glos - Thanks for wasting 30 seconds of my life. We will continue to shop and spend time in the gate streets and the quays. Built in Gloucester due to the last untapped location for an outlet center in the UK, so its perfect location with a waterside location. This centre will not just attract the population of Gloucester but much. much further a field outside of the county for sure. Looking fowward to how this centre will grow over the coming weeks and months.”

“Of course there will be an initial surge of inquisitive shoppers- this goes for any new centre. HOWEVER, I dont believe this will be sustained day after day after day. The Quays will be reliant on Gloucester folk- many of whom are strugglng to make ends meet and some sadly have either lost jobs or are losing their jobs. Like any City, we have a sizeable number of the unemployed, the poorly paid and the job seekers allowance (but not really looking) 'under class', who will not go near the Quays- unless there is a big promotion on cheap tracksuit bottoms and 2004 season football shirts. So, I think the Quays is a so, so concept in the wrong place. Trouble is, it will have killed the town centre off before meeting its own demise/conversion into 'Gloucester Quays mega discount/£1 supercentre at The Docks' destination. Then the slogan will be 'Cr*p has a new destination', but they will probably then stop the ITV adverts!!!”

“I can get cadbury chocolate at the supermarket and anything else i'd need from this mall online, why would i shop in a centre that'll kill trade for the city centre ??....and pay to park there now aswell, never used to at the cinema / peel centre.”

“Having lived in Gloucester until I came to uni I think that the Quays will be a good thing for the city, and if people think that the city centre might begin to "die" then if it is anything like what has happened here in Portsmouth then I think it will be ok. Portsmouth has a Quays as well as the city centre (and other little shopping areas) which are all still doing well and in business. As long as people keep visiting the city centre and don't abandon it completely for the Quays then Gloucester will thrive from this new development.”
