Have your say: Is Steven Gillespie irreplaceable
10:37 - 03-July-2008
Boss Keith Downing is sure to be given some of the money to strengthen his squad, but would he be able to replace the goals and quality of Gillespie?
To net 16 times during a season of struggle last term was a hugely impressive achievement for the former Liverpool trainee, who finally added consistency to his undeniable ability.
Gillespie is not only a reliable finisher, he has the ability to conjure up a goalscoring chance out of a seemingly impossible position.
He is also capable of the spectacular - his overhead kick from the edge of the penalty area at Swansea City last Boxing Day may only have been a consolation in the Robins’ 4-1 defeat, but it was a wonderfully executed effort.
Along with goalkeeper Shane Higgs, Gillespie has emerged as a member of the squad who could make the difference between League One and League Two football for the 2009-10 campaign.
Cheltenham are desperate to hang on to their prized asset for another season and if he matches last season’s achievements, it would be impossible for them to retain him for the duration of his contract.
Paul Baker and the board deserve tremendous credit for turning down a bid of up to £400,000 from Colchester.
Gillespie submitting a written transfer request has not altered the situation greatly – he was always for sale if the price was right and it's no surprise he is keen to test himself at a bigger club.
The level-headed 23-year-old will not allow his performances to slip if he remains at Whaddon Road until next summer.
Cheltenham should not allow Gillespie to leave for anything less than £500,000 but if a club tables a bid of that amount, nobody should be surprised to see him leave.
Can Cheltenham survive without Gillespie?
How much would it take to prise him away from Whaddon Road?
Who would you like to see replace him if he goes?
