1.26pm: Family pay tribute to tragic Jamie

Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 13:26

The family of 19-year-old Jamie Harris, who died in a road traffic collision in Northway Lane in Tewkesbury last Saturday, have paid tribute to a wonderful son and brother.

Jamie's mum Debbie, his dad Tim, and his brother Toby remembered him as a loving man who liked to appear tough on the outside but who was really very gentle and kind.

Debbie said; "We are a very close family and Jamie was an incredibly caring son and brother. He was a great friend to all who knew him and it's been very helpful to read all the lovely things that have been said about him over the last few days."

Jamie was born in Germany, where his father was working for the RAF. In 1990 the family moved to Ashchurch near Tewkesbury and lived at the Army Camp for two years before moving to their current home in Ashchurch.

"He went to Ashchurch Primary School, followed by Carrant Brook Junior School before moving on to Tewksbury School. He had recently completed a three-year apprenticeship in electronic engineering at GE Aviation in Bishops Cleeve.

Debbie, continued; "Jamie was determined to leave school at 16 and go straight into a career, he was so pleased to get his apprenticeship and was hoping to stay on there. We are exceptionally proud of him."

His older brother Toby, 21, said; "Even though we argued, like brothers often do, he'd always stick up for me and I'm going to miss him every day. I'll always remember the fun times we had together and laugh when I remember us dressed up as Noddy and Big Ears for the Tewkesbury Carnival when we were little."

Jamie was an avid footballer, not only following his favourite team Liverpool, but also putting on the boots himself. He had played for several local football teams during his life: the Tewkesbury Dynamos, the Churchdown Panthers and Northway Football Club.

Toby added; "Jamie loved playing football and myself and family friend Brian Walker are hoping to arrange a football match between the Churchdown Panthers and Jamie's friends in his honour."

Debbie, Tim and Toby would like to thank their close friends Bev and Bomber Jones for their continuing and constant support and also Niall, Brian and Niamh Walker, Sue, Dave and Andy Woolway and Toby's girlfriend Lisa Kent.

Tim thanked their friends by saying; "The last few days have been extremely hard but all of our friends have rallied around us and we want to thank them for everything that they have done. Jamie will be sadly missed by all of us and his many friends."
