A man appeared in court today in connection with the assault and kidnap of Gloucestershire soldier Robert Nairac.

Kevin Crilly, 57, from Lower Foughill Road, Jonesborough, Co Armagh, denies charges relating to the British Army officer in Northern Ireland.

Captain Nairac, 29, originally from Standish, was abducted by the IRA from Dromintee, County Armagh, on May 14, 1977. His body was never found.

The accused went to the US during the original investigation and remained there for 27 years.

Crilly was remanded on continuing bail to reappear at Newry Magistrates' Court on August 6.
