4.10pm - Robert Nairac suspect remanded in custody

Wednesday, August 06, 2008, 16:05

A man appeared in court today in connection with the kidnap of British Army officer Robert Nairac in Northern Ireland more than 30 years ago.

Kevin Crilly, 57, from Lower Foughill Road, Jonesborough, Co Armagh, denies two charges of kidnapping and falsely imprisoning Gloucestershire-raised Captain Nairac.

The SAS-trained 29-year-old, originally from Standish, was abducted by the IRA near a pub in Dromintee, County Armagh, on May 14, 1977.

His body was never found.

He was seized during a struggle in the pub's car park, taken across the Irish border to a field at Ravensdale, County Louth and later shot dead.

The accused went to the US during the original police investigation and remained there for 27 years.

Crilly was remanded on continuing bail to reappear at Newry Magistrates' Court on October 1.
