Beat the bullies for my son's sake

Friday, June 20, 2008, 08:00

THE Dad of tragic teenager Sam Leeson understands his son's pain – he was a victim of bullying himself.

Sam, 13, of Tredworth, is feared to have taken his own life earlier this month after being bullied.

Sam, who was a pupil at Severn Vale School, was found hanged in his bedroom on June 5.

His family fear the popular Year Nine pupil had been the victim of online and verbal bullying about his alternative dress sense and love of Emo-music.

Today, Sam's Dad Chris, 39, from Hardwicke, is appealing to anyone who is being bullied to tell someone, so another family can be spared the trauma Sam's parents and siblings are suffering.

In an emotional appeal, Chris, who is divorced from Sam's mum and re-married, said: “Please talk to someone. Change your e-mail address and change your mobile.

“Even change your school but don't destroy the lives of your mother, father, brothers or sisters. Mostly think of the people who will be putting flowers and cards on the gates of your school and trying to make sense of a pointless waste of a life.

“Bullies are cowards and you can beat them. Do it for Sam's sake.”

Sam's Dad says it has taken years for him to recover from the bullying he experienced.

“I was bullied at school purely because I was small,” he said.

“I never knew things were so bad for Sam. I feel so sad he didn't speak to me.

“Because of bullying I ended up not going school and missing my exams.

“The bullying I suffered stayed with me into adult life. I have only just come to a stage where I can handle the anger from it.

“I guessed there was some bullying of Sam.

“But if I'd had an inkling that my son was going to take his life, I'd have watched him night and day.

“I don't want any other parent to go through this. My 12-year-old daughter found her brother hanging. Victims of bullying have to talk to someone.”

But even now Chris, a ceiling fixer, is being tormented by sick bullies on the internet who have been sending him horrific hateful e-mails.

He is scared to even read tributes to Sam by people who loved and knew him in case they are painful, mocking e-mails.

“I open the e-mails because I think it is going to be a tribute to Sam but it is a sick e-mail or video.

“ I am physically unable to stop it because I can't move my finger onto the mouse. I can't believe what I am seeing.

Sam's laptop has now been taken away by police carring out an investigation.

Chris and Sam would regularly swap music files or play computer games.

“We were always file sharing music on the computer and now I can't listen to so many records because of the songs we shared”, said Chris.

“I can't believe I will never be playing computer games with him again.”

Chris has paid tribute to his hard working and funny son.

“We were all going to go on holiday but Sam said he couldn't come because he didn't want to miss two days from school.

“He was so dedicated to school you wouldn't believe it – he'd even done his homework before he hung himself.

“He was a comedian who was very funny, he was hard working and well spoken and well mannered.

“He was my son and I am going to miss his joking, his sparring – I am going to miss him so much.

“I lost a brother to asthma 16 years ago and I had to tell my mother.

“This month I had to go back to the same accident unit and face the loss of Sam.

“I am still not making any sense of Sam's death – it should never have happened.”
