Carer of Alzheimer's sufferer praises art group

ALZHEIMER'S sufferer Gerry West has been given a fresh lease of life, thanks to a new hobby.

Mr West took up art with his wife June last October and nearly a year on the improvement in his condition has surpassed everyone's expectations.

The hobby has helped focus Mr West's mind and the couple, who are approaching their ruby wedding anniversary, now spend their evenings united in a common interest.

Mrs West is recommending the pioneering classes to other carers in a bid to help patients with dementia.

The pair spend every second Tuesday at an art group set up by Gloucester and District Branch of the Alzheimer's Society for people with dementia, their carers and former carers.

Mrs West, 79, said: “Neither myself or Gerry had done any artwork before.

“The first thing we did was tile painting and we both did a painting of birds.

“I looked over at Gerry's painting of a cuckoo and couldn't believe he had painted it – it was really good.”

The painting was framed and taken by his two granddaughters' to hang in their home in Cornwall.

Mr West went on to paint an eagle, which is now hanging in his daughter's office.

Mrs West said: “We are all so proud of his achievements.

“Now instead of Gerry being restless in the evening because he cannot concentrate or hear well enough to watch television, we can sit together and paint.”

Artists Sarah Houldcroft and Lou Spira run the pioneering group with support from volunteers.

Sarah said: “All abilities are catered for and carers and former carers have found it relaxing.

“Some complete novices have been amazed at what they can do, and the only rule is that the phrase 'I can't do that' is banned.”

The art group is entering a team for the Alzheimer's Society's Memory Walk in September and is busy designing and making its own banner to carry.

June said: “I've met so many wonderful people through the events put on by the Alzheimer's Society and it has really benefited Gerry.

“It is for that reason we will be doing our bit on the Memory Walk.”

The annual walks take place at various locations and aim to raise £500,000.

A walk will take place on September 13 at Hucclecote Rugby Club. Thousands of people are expected to take part.
