Matson teen admits robbing taxi driver of his car

08:00 - 24-July-2008

A GLOUCESTER teenager yesterday admitted robbing a Sri Lankan taxi driver of his cab and cash.

At Gloucester Crown Court, Andrew Paterson, 18, of Hill Hay Road, Matson, pleaded guilty to robbing Arulampalam Ketharalingam on April 26 this year of a VW taxi, monies and a torch.

Paterson was bailed for a pre-sentence report. He was told he will be sentenced on a date to be fixed.

Also in the dock with him was Antony Creed, 19, of Mount Pleasant, Kingsway, Quedgeley, who faces the same allegation but entered no plea at yesterday's hearing.

Judge William Hart bailed him to return to court on August 6.

Prosecutor Mary Harley told the court that both teenagers had also been charged with wounding the cabbie but she would be prepared not to proceed with that charge if both admitted the robbery.

The injuries suffered by the taxi driver had not been as bad as first thought, she said.

The victim, a father-of-three, told in April how two passengers turned on him in a row over their £8 fare from Abbeymead in Gloucester to the Quedgeley district on the outskirts of the city.
