Pirates invade docks - with video

Monday, October 27, 2008, 08:00

Pirates invaded Gloucester Docks at the weekend as the city celebrated Britain's swashbuckling heritage.

More than 10,000 people braved the wind and rain to see the Docks transformed into a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean.

On Saturday and Sunday it played host to a series of battles and displays.

Families were able to climb aboard the tall ship, the Matthew and come face-to-face with the motley crew. There were also Viking boats, shanty groups, historical re-enactments, treasure hunts and workshops.

Kira Briscoe, six, from Quedgeley, said: "I have really enjoyed meeting the pirates and seeing the sword fighting. I would like to be a pirate and find the gold."

Phil Walker, 37, from Longlevens, took along his sons Ben, six and Matthew, five. He said: "It's been really great and there is a good atmosphere with lots of people."

City council leader Paul James: "This has really captured the imagination and been fantastic."
