Meet Jedi the police dog - VIDEO
And when it comes to animal versus criminal it's clear who is boss.
Watching as Jedi and fellow German Shepherd dogs Dexter and Zak pinned officers up against a wall while barking loudly it's clear criminals have a fierce fight on their hands.
"They are trained to bite," said dog instructor PC Harry Cook. "They are working dogs who are highly trained to react to the situation and track down suspects.
"If anyone tries to take on the dogs they will certainly bite and if they try to run for it they won't get very far."
Explosives experts were called to Edwy Parade in Kingsholm, Gloucester after reports of a man threatening to blow his house up last Wednesday.
Jedi was sent into the property wearing a video camera to carry out reconnaissance work.
Zak and his handler Richard Hunt showed how the equipment worked as the dog moved into a derelict training property followed by officers who could watch who he was tracking and what weapons they might have.
Jedi's handler, PC Richard Brooks, said the equipment was a major advantage when carrying out police operations.
He said: "It means police officers don't have to put themselves at risk by going in blindly. We can send the dog and nobody is put in any sort of danger.
"The dog would indicate someone is there by barking and we would then go in and get the dog out while officers deal with the situation."
PC Mark Duncton said the dogs work and live with their handlers meaning a strong bond between the duos.
He said: "They aren't pets, they are working dogs but they become part of the family."
