A-level student Erin McGurk pays tribute to inspirational teacher Tony Chesson
By Erin McGurk, 17
It was a devastating shock to hear the news of Mr Chesson's death. He had been a family friend ever since I was born.
When I joined St Peter's RC High School in 2008, he would always smile, ask how I was getting on and make me feel very welcome at the school. He taught my aunt A-level biology in 1976.
She said she wouldn't have taken it only he made the lessons so much fun and interesting.

He knew how we learned best and taught us in that way, ensuring us all the very best for our exams and future.
He treated all students as mature individuals enabling us to develop our personalities and own sense of humour. I will never forget seeing his contagious, positive attitude around the school; he would never fail to say 'hello' with a cheerful smile.
He will be remembered by everyone for his beautiful smile and being such a caring and friendly person who always had the time for anyone who wanted a chat. We will greatly miss him and will remember him and his family in our prayers always.
My father, Eammon McGurk, was also taught by him. He said: "Tony Chesson was a wonderful teacher who made a huge impact on so many young lives. Tony managed to combine traditional teaching values with his own modern teaching approach he valued his student's views and encouraged them to reach for the stars. He will be remembered by all his students as an innovator and huge asset of St Peter's High School."
