WHAT would you like to see in Gloucester at night?

City councillors are asking for ideas to help boost Gloucester's night time economy. And in particular they want to improve the night life for people between 30 to 50 years old.

Councillor Jan Lugg, who chairs the overview and scrutiny committee, said: "There is quite a lot going on around the city aimed at younger people. "In particular we have a thriving nightclub and bar sector which is very popular. But the city should be about involving all sections of the community and we want to hear from families and older people.

"We want their ideas about what would tempt them to come into Gloucester in the evening."

The committee has set up a 'task and finish group' made up of councillors Andrew Gravells, Chris Chatterton and Sebastian Field.

Shop assistant, Zoe Boyles, 49, from the Forest, is not impressed with the amenities for more mature people.

She said: "It would be nice to have a few more restaurants like in Cheltenham. I enjoy dancing so it would be great for the restaurant to have room for this as well."

“Age discrimination? I'm well over 50 and the inference from City Council is that I'm not supposed to be out in the city centre at night! I do enjoy my evenings out a couple of times a week (and the 10 minute walk (in each direction) to my favourite 'traditional' pub in Westgate Street”

“Whatever you try and create (and I'm assuming this will be funded by public money as it is a City Council idea) will have no effect. The simple reason being mature, sensible people do not come into the city, as everyone has said below. Do they come into the city at night on Friday or Saturday? Do they bring their partners in to witness urinating and vomiting in the street? Is it cheaper for them than pay per view cage fighting on the telly?
With the death knell now sounded (if it wasn't already) by the removal of many more people from the day time economy that is Gloucester City by the closure of Bearlands I dread to think what will be left.”

“"Night time economy" = cheap booze and aggressive drunks.
Stop wasting money on propping up this disgraceful stain on the city.
Instead the money should be spent on supporting the decent businesses in Westgate St”

“Sorry council you can't have it both ways - you've made your choice now you must live with it. No way will older people, families, and more discerning people in general want to spend their leisure time within a country mile of the threatening environs where drunken revellers partake of the hedonistic booze culture you preside over and now seem hell-bent on exploiting to the maximum.”

“"No-one is interested except the Friday and Saturday night drunks (or "binge drinkers", if you want to be trendy about it).

Closing off streets is ridiculous. It gives the crazies the feeling that the streets belong to them, to do what they want with, which costs the county an arm and a leg in policing and NHS bills, whilst much of the money spent does NOTHING to help Gloucester economically -
Many of the businesses that take the money are either multi-national drinks companies who employ many outsiders (doormen from Bristol/Birmingham for example) or kebab shops run and staffed by foreigners who send much of the county's money back to their home countries the following day by Western Union Money Transfer.

Night time economy means nothing but nightmares and the steady drain of money out of the county and the country.

All you are doing is helping Great Britain become a bankrupt cess-pit."”

“More places to eat out would be a good start (both posh sit in and sit in comfort food e.g. GBK). Also, at the moment, Gloucester City Centre, with it's muggy buildings, and dirty streets isn't the most inviting during the day, let alone at night. Me and the Miss' are usually happy enough to drove 20mins into Cheltenham than eat out in Gloucester.”
