ON a sunny May evening, when the buttercups create a golden haze across Minchinhampton Common, dining al fresco at the Halfway House in Box takes some beating.

We were lucky to be seated at one of the tables at the front but there's plenty more seating at the smart rear terrace.

The Halfway House offers flexibility with two menus – a bar menu with traditional and reasonably priced fayre and an a la carte menu with finer dining dishes.

My roast chicken breast with wild mushroom sauce and sauteed potatoes (£12.50) was excellent. The sauce was fruity and full-bodied and the flavours were all great.

The team kindly accommodated my companion's dietary requirements and whisked up a dish specially with a cod fillet, asparagus and chips (£14).

Another friend ordered the Halfway Burger with bacon, double Gloucester cheese and chips (£9.50). This was a hearty burger, and a good value meal.

Our son enjoyed the sausage, chips and vegetables (£6.50) from the children's menu. Unlike many children's dishes, the sausages were good quality and served with the same sauteed vegetables the adults enjoyed rather than the bland steamed veg you often get.

Our son moaned about this but I think the principle is a good one.

A chocolate and caramel torte (£6.50) shared between us, was rich, dark and yummy although we couldn't spot the caramel and the price seemed a little steep. Good quality icecream scoops were enjoyed by the children.

Service was friendly but lacked grace and polish. It was quiet when we visited but our food seemed to take a while to arrive. We would have been happy to enjoy the evening sun and the quality real ales had we not had two hungry youngsters, who make any delay seem like an infinity.

Still the Halfway House is a lovely spot, with quality food reasonably priced.
