So far Matthew has raised more than £1,500 for the cause.

The 39-year-old dry stone waller said he wanted to do more than just give loose change to a campaigner. He said: "I spoke to an on-street campaigner about the work Clic Sargent do and thought I'd like to try and do more towards their work.

"The timing is great as any sponsorship would be collected in time for Christmas."

Kirsty McLatchie, running events manager for Clic Sargent, said: "We are delighted that Matthew has chosen to run for us." Anyone wanting to sponsor Matthew should visit virginmoneygiving.com/MatthewGoode.

“I ran this a couple of years ago. It's a superb event - a true test of endurance, unlike that fun run they hold in London. You get dropped off in the middle of the bleak, Scottish countryside. The long climb at 16M is marvellous. Really. It is.”
