Ali the greatest as Stroud humble leaders

08:00 - 01-July-2008

STROUD stole a march over local rivals Redmarley in the race for promotion from the Gloucestershire Division.

Paul Frape's men were victorious by 44 runs at Farmhill as Redmarley slipped from top to third, with Stroud now second behind Hatherley and Reddings.

Wicket-keeper Ali Bell's 68 was the highlight of Stroud's total of 221 all out after they were asked to bat first by Redmarley captain Andy Green.

They lost opener Keith Daniels for three, but Toby Carmen (35) and Leighton Collins (29) steadied the ship.

Chris Job was out for five, but Sam Hester chipped in with 20 and Adam Gibbs made 27 in the middle of the order.

Skipper Frape (7), Chris Dutton (7) and James Job (2) all fell cheaply, but number eight Bell guided Stroud to respectable total.

Green eventually took Bell's wicket, finishing with figures of two for eight from two overs.

Ian Gerken, Paul Newbery and Craig Baldwin also claimed two wickets each, with James Freeman and James Holland capturing one victim apiece.

Redmarley's reply started shakily, with opener Stu Hall bowled by Dutton for one and Kevin Trouw departing for a duck, caught off Dutton's bowling.

Toby Dudfield held things together with 25, but Craig Heath (4) and Gerken (0) both failed to make an impact.

Baldwin then put Redmarley back in the match with a knock of 78 before he was bowled by Collins.

Green made 19 and Newbery hit 20, but Holland and Freeman both failed to trouble the scorers.

Last man Ollie Norman went for 10, leaving Newbery stranded and Redmarley all out for 177.

Collins, Dutton and Frape did most of the damage for Stroud, taking three wickets each.

The two sides meet again at Playley Green this Saturday.
