Couple to stand trial over Tom Holt murder

A couple will stand trial accused of murdering a 36-year-old man from May Hill.

Shaun Michael Stokes, 31, and his wife 25-year-old Petra Stokes, both of Hasnett Road, Ledbury, were charged with murdering Tom Holt, when they appeared before Hereford magistrates yesterday.

Mr Holt's body was found in the River Frome at Avenbury, near Bromyard, on Sunday.

They are accused of murdering Mr Holt some time between September 17 and October 8.

No pleas were entered and they were remanded in custody to appear at Worcester Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on October 22.

Tom grew up in Taynton before moving to Redmarley and then May Hill. He was unmarried and had no children.

Ben Falconer, who went to Tibberton Primary School and Newent Comprehensive with Tom, remembered a happy and amusing young man.

"What I remember most is peals of cheeky laughter," said Ben.

"There was more than a glint of mischief in his eye. I know there will be many people saddened by his untimely death."

On The Citizen website, Michelle Thomas left her tribute to former schoolmate Tom.

Michelle, who now lives in Shipston-on-Stour in Warwickshire, said: "I went to school with Tom, he was also good friend of my brother and he spent some time staying with my brother at my parents' home.

"I feel deeply sorry for his dad, who lost his wife just before Christmas too; so much to have to deal with."
