Gloucester man finds bug in bag of nuts

Wednesday, August 27, 2008, 09:18

WHEN Michael Blakemore bought a snack from Tesco he got more for his money than he bargained for.

For in among the Brazils, almonds and walnuts in a bag of mixed nuts was a 4mm live grub.

Michael, 22, who works at Howarth Timber, was surprised to find the wriggling stowaway in a packet of Tesco Mixed Nuts he bought from Tesco Express in Bristol Road.

He purchased the snack during his lunch break on Wednesday but did not open the bag until he got to his home in Abbeydale, Gloucester.

When he did so, Michael, of Bullfinch Road, discovered cobwebs and the live wriggly bug inside.

He said: "I was completely shocked. I stuck my hand in and felt cobwebs.

"I looked in and saw a grub was stuck to the side of one of the nuts and it was wriggling. It's not the kind of thing you expect to see when you open a packet of nuts.

"It was horrible, it felt disgusting.

"It is lucky that I left it until I got home to open them. Usually I just sit at my computer eating a snack without looking at what I'm doing.

"I could have eaten it.

"I don't know what it is – it could be a moth larva perhaps, because it has wrapped itself up in silk now. I think it's dead but I'm not sure."

Michael added that he planned to take the nuts back to the store in Bristol Road to get a refund on the £2.69 snack.

A spokesman from Tesco said these incidents did happen from time to time.

She said: "We are very sorry for the customers when these things happen.

"Our stores, and our very good customer services teams, are very happy to talk through any circumstances with the customer and put right any mishap.

"These things do occasionally happen, and we must stress that we are very sorry and customers should call us so we can deal with the situation appropriately."
