Have your say over waste sites

Monday, October 05, 2009, 09:30

A public consultation period on the future of Gloucestershire's waste disposal begins today.

Gloucestershire County Council has proposed 13 sites which could be used to dispose of waste, cutting the need for landfill.

Sites on the table include three at Wingmoor Farm, near Bishop's Cleeve and industrial estates near Tewkesbury and Cirencester.

The eight-week consultation is for the council's Waste Core Strategy, which asks the public for its views on 13 potential sites for dealing with waste.

Coun Mark Hawthorne, Cabinet member for planning and regeneration, said: "This is consultation, we are not agreeing the sites. We are happy to talk to anyone about this. It does not mean these sites will be having incinerators on them."

The council is paying £5.4 million a year in landfill tax because it is burying 60 per cent of the county's 1.2 million tons of waste.

It has approved five methods to cut this – two forms of bio-mechanical treatment, autoclave, incineration and thermal treatment – and could approve others.
