Debbie and Gail deliver the programme as bank nurses, whilst also working in their surgeries.

Debbie and Gail said: "It is a real honour to win the Bank Nurses Award; we were completely shocked to even be nominated so to win was a great bonus.

"We're really pleased to see that bank nurses are being recognised and the great work that the DESMOND programme provides is being acknowledged."

Karen Barraclough, head of governance at NHS Professionals, said: "It was my great privilege to be part of the panel that shortlisted the entries for the excellent work of these three bank nurses.

"Debbie and Gail make worthy winners and are shining examples of the best of bank nursing."

Nursing Standard's editor in chief Jean Gray said: "Well done Debbie and Gail, whose work helps those who are newly diagnosed with diabetes to better manage their condition. We are delighted to recognise their contribution with the Bank Nurses Award."
