New £8m super surgery in Gloucester
AN £8 million 'super surgery' is being planned for Gloucester.
The facility, in Horton Road, will combine three existing doctors practices and serve 22,000 patients.
-

how it could look: The surgery in Horton Road.
A consultation has been launched about the proposals to merge Heathville, London Road and Barnwood medical practices.
The new centre will be built next to St Peter's Primary School on land which currently houses empty hospital, office and care buildings.

It will have 27 consulting rooms, seven treatment rooms, a minor operations suite and an on-site pharmacy. There will also be space for other healthcare services and future expansion of GP services.
Dr Nick Gilbert from Heathville said: "All three practices work in old buildings with inadequate space and poor access for the less able. "These new state-of-the-art premises will help us provide the best care for our patients."
Dr Judith Brooke from the Barnwood Medical Practice said they will function independently within the shared facilities.
NHS Gloucestershire has approved funding for the new centre and said it is a 'significant step forward for healthcare in north Gloucester'.
A planning application is due to be submitted to the city council in November and if given the nod work will start on site in the spring with completion a year later.
Dr Karen Carr, from the London Road Medical Practice, said: "We are all excited about the prospect of this new venture."
But existing patients could have further to travel to the new site which is almost two miles away from the Barnwood practice, 0.9 miles from Heathville and 0.8 miles from the London Road one.
Kingsholm and Wotton ward Liberal Democrat councillor Jeremy Hilton is a patient at one of them.
He said: "It's good news to see investment in private practices but it might not be as easy for some people to get to."
An exhibition of plans will be held on November 7 between 4pm and 7pm at Redcliffe College.

“Has anyone ever been to Cheltenham where they have 5 surgerys in one place , total chaos where parking is concerned .Horton rd is already bad enough for parking this will only make it worst . If you want to do this then to save money you only have one reception not 3 you can then cut down on everything else , the only good thing might be that the surgery can be open when we need it to 10pm at night ,all day saturday and 11to 4 like shops on a sunday if that was to happen then maybe if not we will struggle to get a service because of where it is planned for not for the patiences but only for the staff .”

“A good pace for a new surgery in Tuffley would have been on grange road on the old petrol station .”

“We were going to have a surgery to replace Warwick Avenue on Tuffley Lane by the Gladiator but the residents there refused and wrote a petition to say they didn't want it there.”

“I'll reserve judgement until I see the plans. I'm advised that my surgery will remain independent, though based in this new location. As for Warwick Avenue - its been a surgery since Dr Prichard's time, when it was I believe also his home. There have been proposals for a new surgery in Tuffley/Grange to replace this, but NHS Gloucestershire hasn't come up with the funds yet. Land on Tuffley Lane had been identified as a possible site. I've never had a problem getting an appointment at Heathville Road as they guarantee to see all urgent cases the same day, and hold half of the appointments back to be able to do this”

“This seems like a good idea because the old surgery buildings, certainly at London Road, are not adequate. It will also be much easier having a pharmacy on site. As to the buses, I think the number 6 bus does serve the hospital and then proceeds up Horton Road, but it is not that regular and stops running in the early afternoon. With this new surgery there might be an even stronger case for improving that service. Personally I would like to see the number 10 diverted, perhaps on alternate runs as 10 and 10A, so that it goes up Great Western Road and then along Horton Road, before rejoining it's current route. That would give a regular service from the city centre to the hospital and this new GP centre. The 94 would continue to serve London Road as it does now.”

“Great idea, might you now decide to do something about spending some money on the Warwick ave Surgery, or having some Doctors on site in the Afternoon? Or will people from Tuffley have to travel to Horton Road? Plus could you make Heathvile Road more acceasable with people with disabilities.”
