FREEZING temperatures and icy winds are set to hit Cheltenham and the surrounding area over the next 48 hours.

Elderly residents have been warned to wrap up in the sub-zero conditions, which could see snow arrive by the weekend.

Weather expert Ian Thomas said: "It's going to stay very chilly over Thursday and Friday.

"The temperatures of 1C or 2C will feel more like -6C or -7C because of the sharp north easterly wind from Siberia.

"Come the weekend, it's not yet clear what is going to happen. It could get a lot milder or it the cold weather front could win out, bringing rain, sleet or snow."

Charity Age UK urged people to look out for elderly neighbours in the cold conditions.

A spokesman said: "The winter can be a dangerous time for older people.

"Low temperatures raise blood pressure which puts people at a greater risk of heart attacks and strokes.

"We want older people to enjoy the winter and, most importantly of all, stay well."
