A public consultation period on the future of Gloucestershire's waste disposal begins today.

Gloucestershire County Council has proposed 13 sites which could be used to dispose of waste, cutting the need for landfill.

Sites on the table include three at Wingmoor Farm, near Bishop's Cleeve and industrial estates near Tewkesbury and Cirencester.

The eight-week consultation is for the council's Waste Core Strategy, which asks the public for its views on 13 potential sites for dealing with waste.

Coun Mark Hawthorne, Cabinet member for planning and regeneration, said: "This is consultation, we are not agreeing the sites. We are happy to talk to anyone about this. It does not mean these sites will be having incinerators on them."

The council is paying £5.4 million a year in landfill tax because it is burying 60 per cent of the county's 1.2 million tons of waste.

It has approved five methods to cut this – two forms of bio-mechanical treatment, autoclave, incineration and thermal treatment – and could approve others.

“If the waste technology has not been made clear, e.g. incinerator ? how can I possibly decide whether the site from my window is appropriate ? Sham consultation exercise.”

“I am confused! Went to a meeting in Hardwicke and we were told that the consultation had been done! That they had earmarked several sites even though councillor Stan couldn't name any other than Javelin park! They had already put it out to tender and they had timescales all mapped out! So what's this all about? Pretending that they care about what we think even though it appears that every thing is in motion!”

“Sonia Friend wrote a letter about the same thing in Saturday's paper and yes, for once Shaun has a point. It's like deciding whether to go on holiday via plane, boat or train, before deciding if you're going to Sharm El Sheikh, Brittany or Butlins, Minehead.

Still, everyone who thinks it's a bad idea to put the cart before the horse can lobby their county councillor to tell the cabinet so. Sonia Friend's email address is sonia.friend@gloucestershire.gov.uk”

“We should move it away from Gloucester we have had enough of other peoples waste let someone else take it now.”

“newgloucsman - I think Shaun still has a point. It seems a bit silly to discuss the sites for waste treatment separately to discussing the technology that will be used. The Council seems to be trying to be as vague as possible about what will technology they will use. A list of five approved technologies which could be added to doesn't narrow down the possibilities too much.”

“Shaun Shute - so you could not be bothered to read tot he end then "t has approved five methods to cut this ¿ two forms of bio-mechanical treatment, autoclave, incineration and thermal treatment ¿ and could approve others."
Your a shining example of the Labour party that your a part of. Not really understanding the problem before blaming anyone or everyone else.”
