Call for school meals report turned down by Gloucestershire leader
COUNTY leaders turned down a demand for a report on the benefits and costs of giving children breakfast at school.
Green councillor Sarah Lunnon (Stroud East) asked the Gloucestershire schools forum for a report, because of reports of increasing food poverty in the media.
However at the last meeting of the forum, chairman Jackie Hall (C, Quedgeley) declined.
"The benefits of healthy eating for children are fully acknowledged and it is heartening that over 40 per cent of Gloucestershire schools are running breakfast clubs," said Mrs Hall in a written response.

"However it is not within the remit of the schools forum to commission a report on the costs and benefits of providing a free nutritious breakfast at all schools; decisions on whether to offer additional meals clearly rest with individual schools."

“Oh dear another bozo falling for the "everyone on benefits is a wilful skiver" mantra. Lots of people struggle on the massive £71 per week job seekers allowance and yes getting ANY job these days is a hard ask. Working families struggle to make ends meet and not all of them blow money on stereotypical luxuries. How did we get so small and mean minded in this country after all aren't we all supposed to be "in it together" or are some people so bitter and selfish they've forgotten that they're members of the human race. Interestingly Tory Blackpool has just instituted a programme of free school breakfasts in their area and if THEY can do it why can't the Cotswold cavalry at Shire Hall.”

“I'm sorry, but the public purse should not be meeting the costs of providing kids with free breakfast.
Come to think about it, neither should free school dinners exist.
If the kids were at home then their parents would have to feed them, so why should it be free at school?
And please, not clap trap about food poverty. It is a complete myth and doesn't exist in the country, benefits are too high.
Some people may put them in this situation by choosing to spend their benefits on unnecessary items and loans later finding they have no money to eat. However, this is their own choice - and a completely different matter.”
