THE battle for top spot in the Eagle Line Travel Glevum Bowls League hotted up with second-placed Gloucester City gaining a five-shot win over leaders Caer Glow.

Their 83-78 success put City 13 points behind the leaders and they have played a game fewer.

City had to thank Alan Booker for his 24-11 win over Derek Smart and Dave Burrows, who beat Hans Rijk 25-14, because Caer Glow struck back with three winning rinks.

Roger Hambidge gained a nine-shot win over Doug Lewis (18-9) and Roger Bird saw off Ray Fox 19-10.

The result went to single figures with Andy Letts squeezing past Paul Morris 16-15.

After a run of six consecutive defeats, Sir Thomas Rich's halted the slide with a narrow 93-89 win over Gloucester Spa.

Ron Hyam led the way with a comprehensive 23-10 win over Dave Rolls while John Hunt just pipped Lyn Hopkins by a shot in a 21-20 thriller.

The result came down to the narrowest of margins as City saw both Mike Prosser and Dave Hopkins defeat Mike Hancock and Andy Ewens respectively by the same scoreline of 20-16.

Rob Leach, in a titanic struggle with Ian Farrell, edged home 18-17.

In their match with British Energy, Gloucester Civil Service managed just two winning rinks but that was enough for a 97-76 win.

Derek Thorpe piled on the shots to romp home 31-13 against Wendy Durrant while Hugh Hart had an impressive 23-8 win over Christine Magee.

British Energy made a comeback with Robin Powell defeating Sid Norman by five shots (21-16) and the winning margin was the same for Julian Magee, who beat Jack Heath 14-9.

Their third winning rink was that of Mike Matthews, who overcame Harold Grouse 20-18.

Gloucester Co-op moved up into third place after they gained revenge over Dowty with a 113-93 win.

Roy Gunn led the way with the highest winning rink in defeating Martyn Gardner 28-17.
