Newport cling on for victory

After an 18-0 defeat in Wales a couple of weeks ago, Cinderford lost 24-13 at Dockham Road on Saturday.
Before making nine changes at half-time, Cinderford led 10-7 – and it was no fluke that they were in front.
"We controlled the first-half and had all the territory, but only took one scoring opportunity out of four or five," said Cornwell.
"We out-scrummaged them and won good line-out ball. Considering they are effectively a division above us, I was very pleased."
Centre Dave Knight scored Cinderford's solitary try, collecting a neat Tim Stevenson chip and racing through. Stevenson converted and added a penalty.
A rare Newport attack saw wing Steve Taylor grab a try, converted by Dan Griffiths.
With the wind at their backs, Cinderford put Newport under continuous pressure.
Had they made better use of their possession they could have had a substantial lead.
The changes to both sides at the break resulted in Newport having the upper hand.
Nathan Williams crossed for two tries, both converted by Griffiths, who also added a penalty. Tim Stevenson kicked a second penalty for Cinderford.
Cornwell added: "There were so many plusses for us. Dave and Paul Knight were outstanding and Rob Fidler showed up well for 50 minutes, considering he hasn't played for a year.
"Tim Stevenson looked comfortable, Andy Macrae carried the ball well, and Chris Jones and Ollie Winterbottom were others to shine."
It wasn't only the new boys who caught the eye.
Danny Trigg and Chris McNeil proved they can do jobs in Cinderford's first XV this season, while veteran prop Andy Deacon caused Newport big problems in the scrum.
The only negative for Cinderford was a rib injury to Dave Knight, which could keep him out for a couple of weeks.
He is therefore doubtful for Cinderford's opening league game at home to Wharfedale on September 6.
