Ryan's game to stake his claim

Friday, July 25, 2008, 08:00

RYAN PADDOCK will make his second Bishop's Cleeve appearance when they entertain Southam at Kayte Lane tomorrow. (3pm)

The former Bristol Rovers defender, who has spent time with Cheltenham Town during pre-season, is being watched by Cleeve manager Paul Collicutt.

He will be joined by fellow trialists Adam Mayo and Jody Taylor, while Ben Gascoyne is set to make his debut after missing Wednesday night's defeat to Stourbridge through work commitments.

Former Cleeve pair James Vercesi and Dan Avery are back with the club, although Avery is not fit to play, and he is joined on the sidelines by the unavailable trio of Nick Williams, John Meadows and Keith Knight.

Warwickshire side Southam play two leagues below Cleeve and were third in the Midland Combination Premier Division last season.

“We don't know much about Southam and they don't know much about us, but it's always nice to play teams you don't usually meet,” said Collicutt.

“We will be training in the morning at 11am for an hour or so and have a light lunch before the match.

“I hope to have about 20 players to use and every one will participate.

“Ryan's in again and I know he was bitterly disappointed to be released by Bristol Rovers and then told he wasn't required by Cheltenham.

“But I remember when I bumped into some of the Rovers lads in Mallorca last summer and Steve Book told me about him.

“He felt that Ryan was unlucky to be released and told me to keep an eye out for him.

“(New Cleeve recruit) Michael Jackson knows him so he brought him along to training and he's had three or four sessions with us now.

“He's a local lad and it would be nice if we can help him start enjoying his football again and put a smile back on his face.

“Adam Mayo bumped into (Cleeve coach) Keith Knight in town and asked if he could come along to training. He hasn't missed one yet.

“And James has signed with us after missing all last season because he couldn't commit due to work commitments.

“Dan's another one who just played local football last season and he's signed with us too, but he hasn't trained yet.

“We want to get a win after losing out to Stourbridge, even though I was pleased with how it went and there were a lot of positives to come out of that game.

“I just don't like getting beaten at anything, be it a game of tiddlywinks or a game of football.”
