SUN 10.39am - Partridge claims silver in men's eight

Sunday, August 17, 2008, 10:38

Gloucestershire claimed another Olympic rowing medal with Alex Partridge winning silver with the men's eight.

Partridge, who was born in San Francisco to parents who now live in Cheltenham, powered the British boat from the bow seat as they ate into a commanding early lead of champions Canada.

The British boat finished strongly but couldn't catch the Canadians.

Partridge missed out on a place in the Champion men's four boat in the Athens Olympics due to a collapsed lung and would have been desperate to lead the crew to gold.

And he said the crew was aiming for gold.

"I'm really proud of the crew I was racing in but we did want to win the gold," he said.

"That's what we set out to do but we just didn't pull it off today. It's unfortunate but I'm really proud of being with the guys I was rowing with."

Alex's parents Ian and Jane were also in Beijing to watch their son and said they were proud of his performance.

"It feels great, I think the whole crew today did a great job," said Jane.

"They came from so far behind to get a medal - a silver medal."

And she said it meant a lot to Alex having missed out in 2004.

"It means a great deal," she added.
