Alsop to stay into new year
Boss Martin Allen handed the 36-year-old a surprise return to League football after a five-year absence.
After initially joining the Robins for pre-season training, Alsop impressed Allen enough to earn a rolling monthly contract.
He had appeared as a substitute in six of Cheltenham's seven matches this season going into this afternoon's home match against League Two pacesetters Dagenham and Redbridge.
Chasing the club's Football League scoring record, Alsop moved to within two goals of current leader Martin Devaney when he netted the last-gasp winner at Rochdale on August 18.
His squad number is 39 – the total number of goals he needs to hold the record alone.
Alsop enjoyed his most influential all-round appearance since his shock return during the second half of Tuesday's 3-1 Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat to Torquay United.
Allen has been impressed with Alsop's influence off the field as well as his cameo performances on it and the target man's situation will be reviewed in January.
"Julian is here until the start of the new year, when we will look at it, review it financially and see what other players are available, but he is doing fine for us," Allen said.
"He is a good lad and great to have around the place.
"I know what he's like and it is the same with Barry Hayles.
"Both of them have infectious enthusiasm and the way they played against Torquay at a combined age of nearly 80, is what I expect from everyone."
Alsop represented Cheltenham between 2000 and 2003 before spells with Oxford and Northampton.
He then dropped into non-League football with the likes of Tamworth, Forest Green, Newport County and Cirencester Town, before joining Bishop's Cleeve.
Many eyebrows were raised when he returned to Cheltenham, but although Allen accepts Alsop is unlikely to last for 90 minutes, he has so far proved to be a useful attacking weapon as well as lending his aerial ability to the defending of set-pieces.
Alsop last started a competitive match for Cheltenham against Oldham Athletic in April 2003.
"It is probably too much to ask Julian to start the game and he wouldn't last 90 minutes, but it's an option," Allen said.
