Lawless quits Rovers to join York
The 26-year-old Welshman, who can also play at right-back, spent three seasons at the New Lawn.
York manager Martin Foyle said " I am delighted to capture Alex's signature as I have been chasing him for sometime.
"He is a great all-rounder, a technically good footballer and has a very professional attitude towards the game".
Lawless joined Rovers in the summer of 2006 after a two-year stint with Torquay United.
Born in the Rhondda Valley, he progressed through the youth ranks at Cardiff City, before signing pro terms with Fulham.
After failing to make a senior appearance for the Craven Cottage outfit, Lawless joined Torquay in 2005.
He has represented Wales at both under 21 and at non-league representative level.
