Next step for Hadwen surgery plans
CASH from the sale of land earmarked for the extension plans at Hadwen medical practice will be pumped into libraries in Matson and Hucclecote.
City planners have lifted a legal caveat blocking development of the land for anything other than a library and police station. Following a review of library services the county council, which owns the land, no longer has a requirement for a facility there.
City councillor Andrew Gravells (C, Abbey), who is also the county council's cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: "It is good news that the next hurdle placed in front of the surgery's expansion plan has been cleared. There is still some way to go but this was another positive step forward. It is no secret the community is crying out for an expanded facility to help ease the problems with getting appointments.
"The plans are exciting and it will be a great additional facility for Abbeydale and the wider community."

A clause remains on the land stating it must be retained for community use. Discussions are underway for the land to be bought by the Primary Care Trust.
If a sale can be agreed, clinical space at the centre will double. It is hoped the development could be completed as early as this time next year.
Practice manager Ian Robertson said: "It is an exciting development and will allow us to serve the ever-growing Cooper's Edge community and surrounding areas."
Abbeymead resident Glenn Lewis said: "I don't think we need a library there now because we're used to going to Hucclecote. I'm not a patient at the Hadwen but it is much nearer than my current surgery and I will consider moving over."
The surgery has a patient list of around 17,000, but will take 23,000.
