  • Claire Powell Pottery
I have been selling at Stroud Farmers Market since the Autumn of 2006
I try and come to the market on the 2nd and 4th sat. each month but I always make it once a month!
I love selling at the market in Stroud because the atmosphere is always vibrant and I meet an interesting, eclectic mix of people, both fellow stall holders and of course most importantly the regular customers, or 'market goers'.
Through the market I have sold pottery to a variety of places around the world. People on holiday or local people who are going to visit relatives or friends abroad and want to take a special gift, which has a special meaning, as it is made in Gloucestershire and 'tourists' have happy memories of their visit to the market in Stroud.
When I tell them that the item is unique and was made just five miles away that often clinches the deal!
I know my pottery has gone from my stall in the Stroud market to America, Germany and Stroud's twin town in France.
I have also spent time giving extra wrapping to a beautiful bowl which was going as a wedding present to Australia.
I create each piece on my potters wheel in my garden workshop and studio at Frocester Lodge.
The garden and view of the Cotswold hills around me is a great source of inspiration.
After the pots have been fired in the kiln for the first time I take great pleasure in looking at the form of each pot before deciding how best to glaze it. I then take leaves and other plant forms from the garden and hedgerow to form a unique glaze design. I then mix up a glaze, often in shades of blue and green to echo nature.
No two pieces are ever quite the same as I only use each leaf or stem once. Thus each individual piece is a work of art as well as being a practicle item of pottery be it a bowl, jug or ceese dome.
