Special school out of special measures
Ofsted, which visited the school in December, said there has been a ‘huge change for the better in the school’s culture and ethos’ and praised the school’s teaching and learning.
The inspection report said: "Improvements in teaching and learning have been more than matched by improvements in support for students’ welfare and in helping them to manage their behaviour. The staff go out of their way to help students manage difficulties in their lives and to keep them safe."
The good news follows the arrival of the new executive head, David Gaston, in January 2009 after the school was placed in special measure in 2008.
Mr Gaston said: "Obviously we are delighted at the outcome which is the result of a long and challenging journey for all staff, students, governors, parents and the county council.
“Staff have worked very hard and I have been impressed with their dedication. This is only the beginning; our goal is to make Cam House an outstanding school.”
Cllr Jackie Hall, Gloucestershire County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Schools, said: "It's a credit to the pupils, staff and parents who have shown their commitment to turning this school round.
“I am particularly pleased to see that Ofsted have expressed confidence that Cam House can make further improvements. The council will continue to support the school to ensure this happens.”
Local county councillor Dennis Andrewartha said: “The removal from Special Measures is a testament to the incredible commitment of the whole school community; children, parents, staff and governors.
“They should be extremely proud of what they have achieved.”
Local county councillor Brian Tipper said: “I'm absolutely delighted that Cam House has been taken out of special measures.
“It's excellent news that all the hard work has now begun to pay off.”
Cam House is a special school for boys who have behavioural, social and emotional difficulties.
