SHORT, sweet treats leave you hankering after more! This attractive and lyrical programme achieved just that as talented Gloucestershire Young Musician 2012, Timothy Keasley, captivated with the fluidity and colour of his oboe playing.
He produced excellent tone throughout the oboe's registration and frequently diffused a mental picture or story as in Nielsen's charming Two Fantasy Pieces and Alan Richardson's beautifully pastoral Roundelay. In the Roundelay's serious central section Timothy conveyed a different mood as opposed to Nielsen's jocular Humoresque with its whimsical motif figurations.

Conspicuously clean interval leaps demonstrated further technical expertise in Telemann's unaccompanied Fantasia For Solo Oboe.
Competent and supportive pianist and accompanist Christopher Boodle contributed modern contrast with two of his own compositions. Patently from the same hand heavy chords, dissonance, frenetic and often violent motion in the bass typified the classically structured, interesting but slightly contrived works. Along with frequent stridently martial passages his Rhapsody For Solo Piano could be a misnomer!
Timothy's confident exposition of Christopher's Sonata For Oboe And Piano was firm and positive. The piano statement and oboe response section in the Larghetto revealed sterling dialogue between the performers. Two very long held oboe notes transfixed.
The conclusion was characteristic Boodle – a pause before an abrupt single chord and the treat was over.
