Several runners did beat the train back to the station. The first to cross the finish line was Phillip Gould, from Kenilworth, who ran the 14-mile course in 1.33.30.

"We had a fabulous turn-out and hope the event has raised more than £7,000," said Jennifer Green, head of fundraising.

“@TimMessange & Walker100 The "Race the Train which started and finished at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway's station at Cheltenham Racecourse." included the time it would have needed for passengers to alight at Toddington and for more to board before returing to the race course.

Common sense suggests that unless the line had a maximum speed limit the train would be able to exceed 40mph which is the speed of a racing greyhound, the human runners could never have hoped to win.

This was a creditable effort to raise money for charity, and such a pity that one or two thought it worth mocking.”

    “Exactly Tim.

14 miles in more than 1.5 hours makes a top speed of less than 10mph. Hardly a race against a train, more a race against the maximum line speed permitted.

The 28XX class of Churchward's was a cracking freight locomotive in it's day and often stood in for summer passenger duties. Even at 107 years old I have no doubts she can still put in a turn of speed if asked.”
