Three votes to spare as Labour takes fifth seat on county council
In a crushing defeat for county Tories, Labour have gained their fifth seat on Gloucestershire County Council.
Stroud political stalwart Brian Oosthuysen won the seat with 793 votes after a recount, compared to Nigel Cooper's 790.

The Liberal Democrats slipped into third place with Christine Headley, currently one of the ward's district councillors winning 660 votes, having followed a close second in the county elections in 2009.
The election was called after senior Tory councillor Stephen Glanfield died last year. His Amberley and Woodchester district council seat was also up for grabs when the area went to the polls yesterday, but has not yet been called.

“It's a significant defeat, Richard in 'Glawster' as the Tories were predicted to easily hold. And it demonstrates the frustration and opposition to the short sighted, ideologically driven cuts this shower of a government is inflicting on its people. My father will fufil this role to the best of his abilities, which, I can assure you means to an extraordinarily high standard.”

“You gotta laugh at the comments from our tightie whitie rightie leaning friends whose political leaders have proved to be as inept as any other politico you can shake an early day motion at.
Try loosening your Jackstrop,Tory Voter and maybe your voice will drop a couple of octaves :)”

“Tory Voter...just to set you straight...
There's no evidence Miliband carries a "Marxism" card, have you seen it? Also, rather than him failing to have ever worked for a living, he spent many years as a journalist and researcher, so you were wrong on that count too. On the next point, why should he and his partner be restricted on how many children they have? It's their life, and if by "commit" you mean marriage, there is no legal or moral reason to force them to do that either, they just might not want to...doesn't make him any less committed...
Politics has become too much about personal attacks on the people standing up to be counted, why do you think our politicians never have any time to do anything worthwhile when they spend their whole time defending themselves against people like you?”

“Liverpool regected the big society because they are typical Labour voters - they want everything done for them and they don't like paying for anything themselves.
Heaven forbid they actually go to work or do something for the community rather than sitting back and letting everyone do it for them.”

“You lefties cannot take any criticism whatsover. It has been gnawed into you by your previous numpties Blair and Brown. As soon as someone disagrees with you, fight back and blame critic. Lets not forget Prescott, Campbell, and all the lies, spin and misinfo they cast.
Did you vote for an illegal war? did you vote to give prisoners the vote? did you vote to nationalise the banks?
As for Labours socialist values, when have they had to live like one? When have they had scrimp and save just to get by? If you like the idea of socialism, try it, I have, not through choice, it is not very pleasant.”

“Tory voter beware! Your nasty, selfish friends are only in power because the Lib Dems chose to prop them up.
If more of the yellow hopefuls, who've become so used to doing well at by-elections, suffer the sort of humiliation handed out to Christine Headley, then perhaps their party will start revolting.
It's been revolting me with its duplicity since it was formed!”

“This is nothing worthy of enjoyment, Tory Voter. The public will enjoy very little until your party of choice has been wiped off the political map. We will not forget their complete and utter betrayal of the weaker and more vulnerable amongst us. And for your information I am not a Lefty, I'm just a fair minded person who would rather help another than leave them to rot.”

“Well done, hopefully this CRUSHING DEFEAT will tip the balance of power in Westminster. You have given the lefties something to shout about other than the CUTS. Enjoy it while you can.”

“Does no one else think it is ironic that David Cameron has joined Barak Obama in telling Mubarak to listen to his people, they have valid points when he so blatantly fails to do the same himself over the demonstrations staged by people of his own country? Granted they aren't on the same scale but it's still hypocrisy I reckon.”

“Especially given that their reason was that the government had failed to deliver on a single undertaking on the matter.”
