The branch have named her 'Button' as she is a surprisingly bright character, despite her ordeal. Andy, shop manager said "we are horrified to think what could have happened to Button if she had have been left outside all bank holiday weekend.

“Poor little mite, glad to hear someone found it.
Unfortunately the RSPCA really are not interested in animal cruelty and if you report it their response is do the animals have water and shelter other than they they couldn't care less. My friend reported his neighbours, three dogs left out kicked and beaten by owners 50 year old boyfriend, neglected, left out in all conditions in a cage less than 6x6 and sleeping in rabbit hutches, RSPCA not interested in the slightest. Poor animals, but when they become high profile because one is killed by boyfriend the. They will be interested.
    Glad safe end for button.”

“The underlying problem is that cats breed almost like rabbits. Spaying is rather expensive and many people just can't afford it. People may say don't get an animal if you can't afford it, but it isn't always that straight-forward. I have rescued many animals myself. At one time I lost my job and times were extremely hard, with me only working 16hours. At that time I took in a stray kitten (about 8months old), which appeared to have recently had kittens. Having made every attempt to find its owner she stayed with me. It turned out to be pregnant and had 8 kittens. I rehomed most of them, but a few months later, definitely not wanting any more kittens, I had to had them all neutered. As 16 hours a week was deemed enough to live on I could not receive housing benefits, and so was not entitled to get a voucher for neutering (only applicable to those on benefits and for one cat only) so I had to borrow a few hundred pounds to get them all done, which was the right thing. However, not everybody can afford it, and often the cat has already had kittens which the owner can't get rid of, nor can they then get vouchers to spay them all even if they are elligible.
It's a bit of a stalemate really because the vets have to make their money somehow, and I have to say they study hard, work hard and deserve to make a decent living, ; but until something is done to make it more affordable, animal shelters will be full and sad stories like this will be commonplace. Not that I am in any way condoning it. This poor little mite was lucky to survive and should not have been away from its mother at such a young age. I just think it highlights the need for the underlying issue to be looked at and addressed in some way.”

“Heartless way to treat any animal. Out of interest what would have happened if the owner had handed the cat over personally to the centre, would she/he been allowed to leave it?”
