I won't go out with a whimper says Cheltenham Town striker Barry Hayles

BARRY Hayles says he is not ready to retire at the end of what he admits has been an underachieving season.

The veteran striker, who turned 38 on Tuesday, is determined to bow out on a high and does not feel ready to hang up his boots yet.

"This season has not passed me by, but it's been one of those I could have done more in," he said.

"I don't want to go out after a season like this and I want to go out after I know I have done myself justice.

"I'd like to say goodbye to the game on a high and just scraping out of relegation is not a high. I have scored seven goals and I want to get double figures, but I am running out of games."

Hayles has tasted the high life with Premier League club Fulham along with international appearances for Jamaica, but he still retains a hunger to score goals at League level beyond this summer, when his contract at Cheltenham expires.

"I want to carry on because I feel fit enough and want to give it another season," he said.

"I still feel good and once the body starts telling me otherwise I will pack up definitely."

Hayles is not confident of a new deal with Cheltenham, who he joined from Leicester City last summer after two loan stints.

"I honestly don't know if I will be here next season," he said. "Although I'd love to stay I can't foresee it, but who knows."

Hayles is expected to start up front for Cheltenham at champions Notts County tomorrow.

The Magpies are expecting their largest attendance of the season as they are presented with the League Two trophy.

Hayles is no stranger to big crowds, having played in an FA Cup semi-final for Fulham against Chelsea and a quarter-final at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

"It's going to be a big, noisy crowd, but we will go there and think about ourselves," Hayles said.

"We can either go there and try to take the three points, or they could be in a party mood and we could let them enjoy themselves too much, but I don't think the gaffer (Mark Yates) will let that happen."

As well as Fulham enjoying a successful season, another of Hayles' former clubs have been flying high.

Stevenage Borough have been crowned champions of the Blue Square Premier and will take their place in League Two next season.

"I'm very pleased for Stevenage, which is where it all started for me," he said. "I had some great times there and it's about time they came up."
